(KMOV) – A suspect wanted for three murders that happened in 1984 and 1985 in St. Charles County was arrested Monday night in Iowa, more than 250 miles away from the scene of the crimes.
Brian McBenge, 49, was arrested outside of Des Moines, Iowa, prosecutors say
Authorities say they always were keeping track of McBenge, even as he went to Iowa.
He was wanted in St. Charles for the murder of Harold Messler, who was robbed and killed in his home in 1985. McBenge is also being charged with the murder of his grandfather in 1984 in Crawford County.
St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas was a police sergeant in St. Charles back when the Messler murder happened and says he’s also building a case against McBenge for the murder of Elenora Knoerschild back in 1984 in St. Charles.
Authorities say they do not see McBenge as a serial killer, rather they say he was seeking cash and firearms.
McBenge has reportedly waived his extradition back to St. Charles County, so he could be back in the local area in custody within the next few days.
