ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – The St. Louis Art Museum is full of expensive things, including its director’s salary.

According to recent IRS documents, the director of the Art Museum is the highest paid museum director in St. Louis, earning $590,000 a year.

Other museum directors, like those at the St. Louis Zoo, Missouri Botanical Gardens and Science Center, earn around $500,000 annually.

Governing museum bodies say board of institutions set director’s salaries based on industry standards.

Local watchdog groups, however, say museum directors in St. Louis make more than those who work in comparable-sized cities.

St. Louis Alderman Joe Roddy welcomes audits and independent evaluations on local museum director’s compensation.
