(KMOV)-- I know how hot Matt Holliday is right now, but my goodness Lance Berkman continues to amaze me. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when the Cardinals signed him, but he’s proving he can still rake.
After Thursday’s game, a contest where Berkman clubbed a game winning three-run home run, he was asked if he ever seizes to amaze himself. After we (media) and Berkman stopped chuckling, he smiled and said humbly, “I’m trying not to think too much about it, I’m just going up there trying to have good at-bats.” His “at-bats” thus far, at least during April and early May have been great.
Here’s a guy who last year with the Yankees in limited action hit just .255 with a home run, now it looks like the old Berkman who killed the Cardinals at times. I think some of the reason Berkman is having success is because Tony La Russa is giving him breaks here and there. La Russa realizes the importance of a healthy Lance Berkman in his line-up. The right fielder acknowledged La Russa’s decisions to give him days off from time to time saying that the skipper has done a tremendous job working other people into his spot so he can keep fresh and stay healthy.
Berkman was named the National League Player of the Week twice in April. How he didn’t win N.L .Player of the Month is beyond me. But who did win it, was Milwaukee’s Ryan Bruan, who will be in St. Louis beginning Friday night for a three game set with the Cardinals. This should be an offensive series; we’ll see if the Redbirds can not only win the series but pick up their first sweep of the season.
