The Illinois House of Representatives passed a bill requiring almost everyone wear a seat belt in the backseat. If it becomes law, Illinois would be the 12th state to do so.
I talked to a few folks in Fairview Heights Friday. Surprisingly all three had similar opinions... Yes, it's a good idea to wear a seat belt in the backseat, but we'd rather the government stay out of it.
Proponents in the legislature say people have been unnecessarily injured or killed because they didn't wear a seat belt while riding in the backseat.
Opponents say wearing a seat belt as a backseat passenger should be a personal decision and some aren't convinced wearing seat belts in the back seat saves lives.
