SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A measure letting Illinois residents carry concealed guns has failed.

It got only 65 of the 71 votes it needed to pass Thursday in the Illinois House. Thirty-two lawmakers voted against it.

Illinois is virtually alone in barring people from carrying concealed weapons.

Gun advocates say people should be able to carry them if they have the proper training. They argue it would make people safer.

Opponents fear it would increase shootings. Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn had promised to veto the bill if it passed.

The bill is HB148.
