(KMOV) – Illinois lawmakers are considering allowing power companies to set automatic rate increases every year.

The power companies would not have to get approval first.

There would be some protection for consumers – the Illinois Commerce Commission could revoke an increase within eight months, forcing the power company to five the money back to customers.

Ameren Illinois says it needs the change to fund system improvements more quickly.
