ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Cardinals third baseman David Freese is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday on his broken left hand.
Freese was hit Sunday by a fastball thrown by Atlanta Braves pitcher Scott Linebrink during the sixth inning of an away game at Turner Field.
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Freese has a “significant break” in his hand, and will be out nine to 12 weeks for the injury.
This season, Freese was off to a strong start, batting .356 with two homeruns and 14 RBIs.
In 2010, the third baseman was out for most of the season due to an ankle injury.
