WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says he sees improvements in the U.S. relationship with China and is pronouncing the recent state visit by China's president a success for both countries.

But Powell says it is naive to expect China to quickly embrace western values.

Powell said Sunday that China has come a long way in the past 40 years but that the U.S. can't demand Chinese leaders to, as he put it, "turn on a dime" and enact broad economic and political reforms while battling rampant poverty.

The retired general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stressed that relations between the world's two largest economies will have their ups and downs.

Powell appeared on CNN's "State of the Union."
