(KMOV) – Investigators believe a slick spot caused the minor fender bender that took a bizarre and dangerous turn in an instant, forcing one man to fall to his death off Interstate 55 downtown.
The family of 43-year-old Zeljko Landup is trying to understand why and how this happened.
Landup’s car and another car were off to the side of the road after the first collision. But it was a third vehicle that crashed into the scene, forcing Landup over the wall. Police say that third vehicle was a pickup truck.
“It doesn't seem real a part of me doesn't want to believe it,” says Sinisa Landup, the victim’s son.
Part of Sinisa Landup is still waiting for his father to come home from work, yet he knows that won’t happen.
The 43-year-old who left Bosnia nine years ago for a better life has now left behind his wife of 18 years and two boys.
“He was lawful and religious. He taught us manners and he was a dream dad and dream husband that anybody would want,” says Sinisa. “He was just amazing."
Landup was killed after falling off the elevated section of I-55.
“We're not certain if his vehicle or the victim’s vehicle struck the victim causing him to fall over. And it also could be that he may have panicked and slipped and fell over," says Carlos Ross of the St. Louis Police Department.
Another woman in Landup’s car and the other driver were also hurt in the second crash. Their injuries were minor.
“You can't blame anybody,” says Sinisa. “Nobody woke up and said, ‘let’s go kill somebody.’ You can't blame anybody for it, it was an accident."
