Suspect in East St. Louis killing sentenced on weapons count

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A man awaiting trial in the 2009 shooting death of an 80-year-old East St. Louis man has been ordered to spend 20 years in prison on a weapons charge.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that 47-year-old Dennis Edwards of Belleville was sentenced Thursday in St. Clair County.

Edwards was convicted last month of unlawfully possessing a weapon as a felon.

Edwards is charged with first-degree murder in the March 2009 killing of Spencer Brewer. Brewer was the father of 11 children. He was fatally shot in the chest before his body was found covered with clothing and debris in his home.

Two of Edwards' nephews also are charged in the killing and are each jailed on $1 million bond.
