EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- The father of a 6-year-old East St. Louis boy killed in a townhouse fire says he believes his son may have accidentally started the blaze while playing with a cigarette lighter in an upstairs bedroom.
Kenyartte Griffin Sr. tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his other son, 4-year-old Kemorian Griffin, told investigators Kenyartte Griffin Jr. found a lighter in his parents' bedroom.
The older child's body was found in an upstairs bedroom after the fire Tuesday night. His younger brother managed to escape and was released from a hospital Thursday.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating what caused the fire.
The elder Griffin says it's the second time he's lost a child. Another son died of medical issues when he was two days old.
