(KMOV)-- Water is finally shut off at a busted main that’s been spewing for a week in south St. Louis.

It could be days before the water main at Geyer and Mississippi is fixed, which means families will go without water.

Crews rushed to get the water turned off before Wednesday night’s winter weather.

The problem is eight feet below ground. The ruptured water line is 42 inches in diameter and dates back to the 1960s.

Residents in the neighborhood feel frustrated without water, and because it took days to find the exact spot of the leak and turn off the water.

Residents have resorted to drinking bottled water and going to other houses for showers.

Crews are scheduled to work around the clock to fix the ruptured line, but it could take up to two weeks.
