(KMOV) – A 6-year-old boy was killed in an East St. Louis apartment fire Tuesday evening.

This happened in the 1600 block of Russell around 7 p.m.

Family members say a mother and her two boys live in the apartment where the fire took place. According to the boy’s grandmother, the two boys, ages four and six, were upstairs at the time of the fire. The grandmother says the mother had just stopped next door to see a neighbor when the fire broke out.

She reportedly ran up to get the children, but was only able to save the 4-year-old.

The 4-year-old escaped safely, and was taken to Cardinal Glennon.

Fire officials say they are not yet sure what caused the fire.
