(KMOV) – A school board member from Troy, Illinois has been charged with killing his father and stabbing a woman and her daughter.

The suspect is identified as Gary Schmitt. He is a member of the Triad School District in Troy, Illinois, and has been behind bars since Sunday night.

Police in Effingham, Illinois say Schmitt stabbed the 43-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter, and once he was in custody, he admitted to killing his father in June of 2010.

The murder charge is from June 20, and autopsy results show Schmitt’s 72-year-old father was beaten to death.

Prosecutors say Schmitt told them his father had cancer and was not in good health, and that he hit his father on the back of the head with a rock. He said he wanted to spare his father the agony of dying of cancer.

Prosecutors also say Schmitt was an old friend of the stabbing victim he recently reconnected with on Facebook. According to officials, Schmitt went to her home on Sunday and stabbed Kimberly Bourland and her 15-year-old daughter.

Schmitt reportedly told the officers he was directed to stab the two through an order from God.

Correction: Schmitt is not a member of the Troy police force as was previously reported on air and on the website.
