(KMOV) –- A MetroLink station in Belleville may be quickly becoming an easy target for smash and grab thieves. The station is right next to Southwestern Illinois College, and there have been at least eight to 10 incidents of break-ins since late last week.
On Monday, five piles of broken glass stretching from one end of the lot to the other were found. Belleville police were unable to provide police reports due to the Martin Luther King Holiday, but one commuter says he saw two of the cars with windows broken out immediately in front of the MetroLink platform – in one of the most visible spots on the lot.
Like last week, News 4 spent several hours on the lot and never saw a MetroLink security guard.
Jeff Giessler had his car broken into last Thursday, and he says he spotted another round of damage on Monday. Nothing was stolen from Giessler’s car, but the broken window cost him $230 to repair.
A Metro spokesperson was unaware of the break-ins from the weekend. Last week Metro said it does use surveillance cameras, police patrols and its own security to try and prevent vandalism.
