JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has released $7.5 million for public school busing that he had cut from the state's budget.
The decision Thursday by Nixon amounts to a little more than 10 percent of the $70 million he withheld from schools when the budget year began July 1.
Nixon's budget director told The Associated Press of the decision to provide the money shortly after the AP reported that the state's cash balances were improving and that some lawmakers were questioning Nixon's continuation of the school-funding cut.
But budget director Linda Luebbering (LOO'-ber-ing) says Nixon decided to provide the money before lawmakers scheduled a news conference to call upon him to do so.
