ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- A southwestern Illinois English and journalism instructor who's the reigning Illinois Teacher of the Year soon could have more hardware for her mantle.
Alton High School teacher Annice Brave is one of four finalists for national teacher of the year.
Brave has been a teacher for 23 years and is chairwoman of the high school's English department. She also is an adviser to students on the school newspaper and has worked with Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey to develop a student radio program to give students an opportunity to get on-air experience.
The national winner will be announced this spring.
The Illinois State Board of Education says it's been more than four decades since a teacher from the state has been chosen for the honor.
