Illinois lawmakers want to raise state income tax

(KMOV) -- Some Illinois lawmakers want to temporarily raise the state income tax to five percent for a few years.

It is now at three percent.

If approved, it would bring in an estimated eight billion dollars to the state. This amount is about half of the projected upcoming budget shortfall.

During the campaign, Governor Quinn promised to veto any increase over one percent.

The legislature is in its lame duck session before the new session starts.
