(KMOV)-- The Missouri State High School swim championship gets underway this weekend at the St. Peters' Rec-Plex. One of the odds on favorites will be Lafayette High School. The Lady Lancers have put together a simply amazing streak. They have won 25 straight Suburban South/West Conference titles. Also to their credit; 9 state championships, 3 second place finishes and 5 third place honors. That's finishing in the top 3 in half of the state's 34 championship meets.
The Lady Lancers won state 3 years ago and have finished third the last two years. Not surprisingly, the girls who were freshmen on the championship team want to go out with another taste of a title to their credit. And the team is loaded. 4 of the 5 seniors on the squad have signed letters of intent with Division One schools. Samantha Wright will continue her swimming career at Kentucky. Jessi Holz is headed to Illinois. Shannon McCoy will attend Colorado State University. And Ashleight Grammar will swim for the Cornhuskers next year.
Coach Todd Gabel is in his 6th year with the team and his 3rd as Head Coach. He says those 4 plus Senior Hannah Witzig and Junior Taylor Paskoff give his squad more depth than most and he hopes that edge is enough to bring home another state title. The meet starts Friday.
