(KMOV)-- Two East Alton parents were charged after their three children took a dangerous amount of a prescription pain killer.

Jeffrey Colonna, 20, was charged unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Kayla Boner, 21, was also charged with child endangerment.

Authorities said they responded to a 911 call around 9 a.m. Tuesday in the 20 block of Marion Lane. The call was in reference to small children that had possibly ingested Vicoden, a controlled substance. Three children ages 3, 2, and 11 months were found in the residence.

Police were told that Colonna and Boner were asleep in the residence. When they woke up they saw that two of the children had possibly ingested the Vicoden. The Vicoden was in an unmarked prescription pill bottle on a dresser in the residence. Colonna called 911 from the residence requesting medical personnel.

The children were transported to an area hospital. They were examined and later released from the hospital.

Authorities said while police were investigating the incident, Colonna initially identified himself with a false name. After confronting him with the false name, Colonna provided false information about how he obtained the prescription medication. Colonna was confronted with his conflicting statements and he eventually told police that he purchased the Vicoden off the street illegally. The pill bottle was left in an area where the children were able reach it and take the cap off.

The children were taken into protective custody.

Bond was set at $20,000 on Colonna. Bond was set at $3000 on Boner.
