Man charged with firearms possession, threats

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- An Illinois man has been charged in Missouri with illegally possessing weapons and threatening to injure his family and police.

The U.S. Attorney's office in St. Louis says 47-year-old Lowell Aughenbaugh of Odell, Ill., was arrested Thursday in that state and was to be extradited to Missouri.

Prosecutors say Aughenbaugh called his wife in Rolla, Mo., on Dec. 31 and threatened to kill her, family members and police who might try to stop him. He allegedly repeated the threat to another family member.

On Jan. 3, police seized nearly 100 firearms -- including 15 machine guns -- and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition in two safes.

Aughenbaugh's lawyer, Lance Thurman of Rolla, says his client was arrested initially on state charges, released and arrested again on federal charges. That complaint is under seal.
