A group of students petitioning Lindenwood University to sanction a Gay Straight Alliance on campus has received a rejection.
Lindenwood called the group "rather parochial and doesn't offer a benefit to the campus community." It said "GSA has been known for being a club that promotes a certain agenda." Lindenwood says it would like the members to consider a social justice alliance that could deal with race, religion, sexual orientation and other issues that face frequent scrutiny.
Lindenwood already has organizations that are Christian in nature. It has a Black Student Union. As of today, it does not have an organization dealing with the issues of sexual orientation. Do you think it should? Do you think it should not?
What do other local universities do? St. Louis University, Washington University, University of Missouri St. Louis, Fontbonne University, Maryville University and Webster University all have organizations listed on their official university websites dedicated to issues dealing with sexual orientation..
Latest statement from Lindenwood:
The students in the GSA are good students with good ideas. Lindenwood University’s administration is meeting with them to work this matter out within the university’s guidelines and mission.
