Edwardsville committee sets precedent, denies LED sign request

Edwardsville has set a precedent regarding its lighted signage laws by denying a sign variance.

On Thursday, the city’s Administrative and Community Services (ACS) Committee voted 2 to 1 to deny a sign variance request by Handee Mart/BP Amoco to add a green LED light band around the fuel canopy on the property located at 415 North Main.

Owner Patel Bhavin would like to turn the location, currently a Handee Mart, into a BP gas station/convenience store.

Along with a long list of improvements needed to convert the station to a BP, Mike Parson, who submitted the sign variance application on behalf of Bhavin, said the company would like to add a green LED strip on three sides of the canopy.
