Do you ever have a hunch how things are going to turn out... and they do? But you've already made the decision to err on the side of caution. That's kind of where I was today. The Belleville Police put out a release that a 17 year old girl left her job at Taco Bell at 1:30 a.m. Sunday and hadn't been seen since. As a reporter who's seen countless of these cases end with "the teen was found at a friend's house", I kind of figured this was another one of those. But... what if it wasn't? I've also covered, sadly, cases of missing children which didn't turn out well. So we follow the lead of the Police, put her picture up, try to talk to her foster family, do talk to Police, and retrace her steps. The case got (I thought, wrongly as it turned out) scarier when her cell phone was found off the beaten path, with the back off and battery out. Fifteen minutes before air, we heard she'd been found at a friend's house. (Not near the phone, as it turned out) So the story was killed. Yes, it was frustrating to know how many officers spent their whole day on the case... and a little frustrating to know we'd wasted time on it... but overall, it was a great day. The girl may have done an unwise thing and frightened people needlessly... but she's alive and well. Let's hope she gets the help she needs.
