State's Attorney critical of budget

In May, department heads in Madison County's were told to submit a fiscal 2010 budget that was 6.5 percent less than the one in 2009.

At the time, Madison County Sheriff Robert Hertz and Madison County Circuit Clerk Matt Melucci criticized the cuts and the way they are being carried out. Hertz said the cuts would mean that he can't replace four deputies who were either retiring or leaving. The cuts, he said, would endanger public safety. Melucci has criticized the across-the-board nature of the cuts.

In recent remarks to the county's Judiciary Committee, Madison County State's Attorney Bill Mudge echoed both sentiments.

Mudge's said his office will be losing 2 1/2 workers, including a part-timer who handled the Alton docket and a full time person who works in misdemeanors.
