A Richmond Heights police officer on patrol smelled the smoke and sounded the alarm. Inside, they found the body of the homeowner. Neighbors describe him as an elderly man, heavy set, with health problems. They also say he kept to himself and had sheets covering all the windows.

Sources told News 4 investigators found something suspicious inside and that's why the Major Case Squad was alerted. Early Wednesday morning, squad leaders called their involvement preliminary.

But as the afternoon wore on, sources confirmed with News 4 that police were searching for a particular vehicle in connection with the homicide in Richmond Heights. And crime scene investigators for the county returned to the scene.

Prosecutor Bob McCulloch's spokesperson released a two sentence statement, saying they are waiting for the results of the autopsy being conducted on the resident of the home and the investigation concerning the cause and origin of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.

They are not releasing the name of the man killed in the fire or saying why the Major Case Squad is involved.
