Illinois collects record amount in child support

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services collected nearly $1.4 billion in child support in fiscal 2009 -- a record amount.

Department Director Barry Maram says many parents may be out of work because of the recession and finding it difficult to pay child support. Still, he says the 2009 amount collected is a slight increase over that of 2008.

And Maram says struggling families are depending on child support more than ever because of the tough economic times.

He says several programs helped his department achieve the record level, including those that deny hunting and fishing permits to parents who don't pay child support. Other programs suspend their driver's licenses or post deadbeat parents' photos on a Web site.
