Man pleads guilty in shooting involving deputy

EDWARDSVILLE - A man who drove 110 mph on Interstate 70 last July while a companion fired an assault rifle at a pursuing Madison County sheriff's deputy may get up to 30 years in prison as a result of his guilty plea Wednesday.

Simeon R. Moutafov, 20, of New Richmond, Ohio, pleaded guilty in Madison County Circuit Court to a count of aggravated battery with a firearm in exchange for a prosecution agreement to drop a charge of attempted first-degree murder and other charges.

During a hearing Wednesday, Assistant Madison County State's Attorney Neil Schroeder said that Moutafov was the driver, while co-defendant Michael J. Gilb of Amelia, Ohio, shot at Deputy Kyle Doolen's squad car with an assault rifle.
