CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has reopened four days after deadly storms raked the region, leaving more than 28,000 homes and businesses still without power.
SIU was hit hard by last Friday's storm and postponed summer school classes until Tuesday, though a boil order remains in effect on campus when it comes to drinking water.
As many as 68,800 customers were without power at the height of the outages.
Hardest hit were customers in Franklin, Jackson, Saline and Williamson counties.
The storms were blamed in one Illinois death. Eighty-seven-year-old George Arbeiter died after a limb crashed onto his Murphysboro home and hit him on the back of his head, sending him down a flight of stairs. He died hours later at a hospital.
