MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV) – Madison County residents concerned about staying safe during severe weather can now receive alerts directly to their phones.
Officials are urging residents to sign up for CodeRED, which will notify residents immediately when there’s a tornado warning or other type of weather emergency
The system is especially important for those in Alton, where there are no tornado sirens.
The new alert system is costing taxpayers $56,000 a year.
Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says until now the city didn’t have a way to warn residents.
“So this is a more personalized way and faster way to get it to residents by alerting cell phones of impending weather coming through Alton.”
