EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man was fatally stabbed in East St. Louis Monday morning, bringing the total number of homicides in that city to four in just two days.
According to Chief Floore, East St. Louis officers responded to the 800 block of North 80th Street around 2 a.m. after receiving a call for a person down.
When officers arrived, they found Michael Barton, 18, had suffered multiple stab wounds. Barton was transported to Belleville Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
According to authorities, the suspect, Rodney Lewis, left the scene shortly after the stabbing, but returned later with a shotgun. Police say he intended to hurt the family members of the victim who witnessed the stabbing.
Lewis was taken into custody and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Barton’s death is the fourth homicide the city experienced in a two-day span. Early Sunday morning, three people were fatally shot outside Club VIP. The suspects involved in that shooting have not yet been caught.
