Missouri Senate candidates' positions on the economy

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The economy has been a predominant theme of the 2012 campaigns. And Missouri's U.S. Senate candidates have some different views about how to improve it.

For example, they contrast on tax policy. Republican Rep. Todd Akin would like to renew all of the income tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush. Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill wants to extend them only for families earning less than $250,000 annually.

McCaskill says the 2009 stimulus act was critical to stopping an economic free-fall. Akin says it failed.

McCaskill says she supports raising both the federal minimum wage and Missouri's lowest-in-the-nation tobacco tax. Akin opposes increasing either one.
