ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) – There is no need for an explanation as to why Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein’s nickname is “The Leg.”
Including the preseason, Zuerlein is 11-for-12 in field goal attempts with the only miss coming on a 62-yard attempt in the preseason finale. He has been so impressive that his leg has its own Twitter account (note: it isn’t actually operated by him or his leg, but is still flattering).
So what is Zuerlein’s range? “Pretty deep,” according to special teams coordinator John Fassel.
“I’ll put it this way, he can set an NFL record if the conditions are right,” Fassel added. The NFL record is 63 yards, which has been accomplished by four kickers. The most recent kicker to accomplish it was David Akers on September 9.
An NFL kicker isn’t always the most popular guy in the locker room but, according to his coach, he seems to have what it takes.
“A 25-yard field goal to him is the same as a 65-yard field goal,” Fassel said. “Every kick, which is great about him, is the same. He doesn’t kind of just tender foot the short ones and he doesn’t try to kill the long ones. Every one is the same. He thinks he can make it and if we had the chance, he probably could.”
It is an impressive mindset that could keep the 24-year-old around for a long time.
Side note: A couple of weeks ago I wrote about several fantasy-worthy Rams players which included Zuerlein (as long as your league includes kickers). I am not going out on a limb to say he is the best kicker in the league, but if your team is still in need of a valuable leg then pick him up.
