ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) - A local man has been sentenced to close to 20 years in prison for shooting a police officer.
Court documents show 36-year-old Vernon Collins shot a police officer on March 1, 2011. According to the documents, the policeman responded to a call about a prowler at 5231 St. Louis Avenue.
When the officer arrived he found Collins, the suspected prowler. In attempt to apprehend him he tackled him. During the struggle, Collins grabbed the officer's firearm and shot him. He was later discovered hiding in nearby bushes.
Collins pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of being a convicted felon and possessing a firearm. Collins has multiple felony convictions on his record and can't own or possess a gun as a result.
