St. Louis alderwoman wants anti-meth law

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A St. Louis alderwoman is pushing for a city law requiring prescriptions for cold and allergy pills containing pseudoephedrine, a decongestant commonly used to make methamphetamine.

During an interview, Democrat Jennifer Florida told a St. Loius radio station that police this year have dismantled two meth labs in her ward. Florida manages the 15th ward. While clandestine meth labs are most often found in rural areas, Florida says the city of St. Louis needs to address concerns about the dangerous and addictive drug.

Florida co-sponsored a similar measure in 2010 but it never got a hearing. About 70 Missouri communities currently require prescriptions for pseudoephedrine products, but state lawmakers have so far declined to pass a statewide prescription-only law.
