(KMOV) -- A new study is recommending a fifth lane be added to the eastbound side of the Poplar Street Bridge.
The extra lane is part of a three phase proposal to the East West Gateway Council of Governments for easing congestion on the bridge. The extra lane would be added by sliding the eastbound deck nine feet and then constructing the new lane between the west and east bound decks.
The extra lane wound also boost the price tag of the project to $80 million dollars. The state of Illinois would have to come up with $25 million. MoDOT is already committing $55 million for the project.
