East St. Louis board ousts city manager

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- East St. Louis has a new city manager.

Robert Betts had held the job for more than three years before being fired Sunday night by the city council, which said East St. Louis needed to go in a new direction.

The city's budget chief, Delitra Hudson, was named interim replacement and will do both jobs as city leaders assess whether she should get the city manager's job for good.

East St. Louis has had a string of city managers, most lasting just a few years. In the 16 months before Betts was hired, there were four different managers.

Betts says the $90,000-a-year job was a tremendous challenge and learning opportunity, and he says he wishes the city well.
