Where to begin with the Cardinals. Are you more disturbed that the Cardinals just got swept by the Royals at home? Or is it possibly that they only scored 4 runs in the entire series? Maybe it was that the bullpen made fatal errors in all three games. It could have been that the Cardinals had exactly one walk in the entire series. So many problems and I have no idea where to begin.
Clearly this team is not the same without Albert Pujols. No team is the same without their best player but I think the biggest effect is that now every hitter up there is pressing. Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel and Troy Glaus all feel they have to make up for Pujols and they start swinging at pitches they shouldn't and they lose patience. No one can make up for Pujols long term but short term the rest of the club needs to exhibit patience and stay within themselves.
My biggest concern is that the Cardinals may have been living on borrowed time. They have finally hit the wall on injuries and it looks like it has caught up to them. This is not exactly the best time to be hitting the wall either. The schedule is very difficult over the next month. It is as follows up to the All-Star Break.....
Weekend Series in Boston
3 Game Road Series at Detroit
3 Games at KC
Home against the Mets for 3
3 at home vs. Chicago
3 at Philly
3 at Pittsburgh
Those are a lot of good teams the Cardinals are facing over the next month and they need to start getting some people back soon. It appears Yadier Molina should be ready to go this weekend in Boston. Albert Pujols has been working out and looks like he will be available shortly after his 15 days on the DL. Those guys can't get back soon enough.
The Cardinals got the pitching over the past few games but didn't get the hitting. Hopefully getting #5 back will fix everything but what we saw the past few days should send red flags up everywhere.
One final thought. If Chris Duncan's last name was Smith would he be in a Cardinals uniform right now. I have never been one to play the nepotism card but my goodness he is lost at the plate. Duncan since being recalled is 4 for 31 with 0 HR and 1 RBI. For those of you keeping track at home that is .129. Right now, and this is not being too harsh, the Cardinals have the worst first base situation in all of Major League Baseball. I think that John Mozeliak should really consider making a trade, if Pujols is going to be out much longer, for a power bat to come off the bench and play first base if needed.
