How did this happen? How in the world do the Cardinals lose to a pitcher who was 1-7 on the road with a road ERA of 7.83? How in the world do you lose to a team that is 21 games out of place? At your home park no less! How do you have a starting pitcher go 7 innings giving up one run and lose? How do you have a catcher go completely brain dead in the 9th inning? How does a team that is supposedly in a pennant race look so flat and dead after returning home from a pretty successful road trip? In addition how do you look so flat after a much needed day off? I have no idea how in the world the Cardinals could of lost the game tonight to the Pirates but they did.
The Cardinals have been awful at home this season in comparison to their road record. After the loss tonight they are 33-29. A team that is supposed to be a playoff contender can not be this bad at home and expect to make the playoffs.
Tony La Russa has made this point time and time again this season, sometimes at inopportune times, but it hasn't just been the bullpen's fault for the Cardinals problems this year. Where did the Cardinals hitting go tonight? Ian Snell is not Brandon Webb or CC Sabathia. He is Ian Snell and you have to score some runs. To not do it is a shame. This team has been and continues to be too streaky at the plate this season.
I watch games like tonight and wonder how in the world the Cardinals can possibly be considered a playoff team. But then I look at the standings on August 20th and see they are only 2 1/2 games out. This team has been playing above their heads all year and they should be commended. But now is the time to put up or shut up. Time to make a move in the standings and tonight, I am afraid, is what lies ahead for the Cardinals.
