(KMOV) – A suspect faces charges after police say he robbed a man and woman at gunpoint in the Soulard neighborhood late Monday night.

Darius Johnson, 21, of East St. Louis, was charged Tuesday with first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to police, the victims were near the intersection of 10th and Geyer around 11:45 p.m. when Johnson approached them.

Johnson took a white purse and other unknown items from the victims and fled the scene.

Police say the Johnson ran across Interstate 44 to get away from police. He spotted officers and tried retreating, but was apprehended in the 1800 block of Menard around 1 a.m.

Additional details surrounding the incident were not immediately available.
