(BaseballStL) – It’s hard to follow up on a complete game giving up just one hit, but Adam Wainwright held the Cincinnati Reds to five hits in 8.1 innings and no runs.

Wainwright cruised through the first three innings, fanning 5 of the first 6 batters faced until giving up a hit to Brayan Pena, but the Georgia native didn’t give up any runs.

Instead, the Cardinals ace got help from his catcher and his name wasn’t Yadier Molina. Tony Cruz, starting in place of Molina, was involved in two of the Redbirds’ 4 runs.

He scored the first run on an RBI single from Kolten Wong and then in the sixth, the back-up catcher singled in Matt Adams to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.

In his five starts this season, Cruz has made the most of them hitting .304 and earning 4 of his 5 RBIs as a starter and 2 runs scored.

The Cardinals also gained offense off of two errors by the Reds in the seventh to take a 4-0 lead. They would need those insurance runs as they struck out 11 times, Jon Jay and Jhonny Peralta accounting for 6 of those strike-outs.

But four runs was all the Cardinals would need as Wainwright and Pat Neshek shutdown the Reds through nine innings.

The Redbirds come back to St. Louis for a three-game series against the New York Yankees.
