(KMOV.com) – The Normandy School District filed a lawsuit Wednesday to have a law that requires it to pay for the transportation of its students who transfer to other districts thrown out.
In the lawsuit, the district contends the law that requires an unaccredited district to pay for the transportation costs of students who transfer to another school violates the Missouri Constitution and that is had hurt the district because officials claim it is more expensive for the district to pay for the students transportation, than the new district where the transfer students are being sent.
In the lawsuit, the district’s superintendent said the district held off on filing a lawsuit hoping that Missouri lawmakers would solve the problem.
“We tried to follow the letter of the law,” said Dr. Tyrone McNichols. “We intentionally did not file the legal case earlier because we trusted that the political system understood the plight of the Normandy School District, but their inaction seems to suggest something different.”
The Missouri Board of Education recently voted to dissolve the district.
