ST. LOUIS -- Washington University in St. Louis is getting national recognition for its recycling and food recovery programs.

The Environmental Protection Agency says a compost program run by the university’s dining services has diverted 317 tons of food waste from landfills since 2011. The university uses the compost on the grounds of the campus.

The school has also recycled more than 23,000 gallons of kitchen waste oil into biodiesel to fuel its delivery trucks. The EPA says Washington University was the first in North American to ban sales of bottled water on campus, eliminating about 386,000 bottles every year.

EPA officials planned to visit the school Wednesday to present a certificate of recognition.
