(BaseballStL) — It took nine pitches to give the Cardinals the lead Tuesday night, and it came off the bat of Matt Adams.

Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo was one out away from a perfect first having retired Matt Carpenter and Kolten Wong quickly, but Matt Holliday broke into the hit column with a single to center.

Batting cleanup once again, Adams took a 1-0 pitch 407 feet to right center for his third home run of the season to give the Cardinals a quick 2-0 lead on two hits.

Wainwright held the Diamondbacks hitless until the fourth, when Paul Goldschmidt shook the spell to double off the wall.

The Cardinals responded by picking up a run in the bottom half, when Yadier Molina doubled, moved to third and scored as Jhonny Peralta followed suit to push the lead to 3-0.

Goldschmidt's would be the only hit Arizona managed all game, as Wainwright turned in six innings of 12 pitches or less.

St. Louis' bats would surge again in the fifth, when Wong's two-out double brought team RBI leader Holliday up. The left fielder wasted no time, singling home the speedy second baseman for his 25th run batted in.

Peralta would continue his strong Tuesday night, homering to left center on a no-doubter in the bottom of the sixth, giving Wainwright a 5-0 cushion.

The big righty would take advantage, picking up his first career one-hitter as he went the distance on 115 pitches, striking out nine.
