Carpenter-Wong 1-2 punch gives Redbirds big weekend

(BaseballStL) – When it comes to setting the table in front of the big bats this weekend, Matt Carpenter and Kolten Wong served as the forks, spoons and knives giving the big boppers all the tools they needed to win.

Wong and Carpenter put on a clinic against the Braves, going a collective 9 for 21 with 6 runs, 4 walks, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

They also accounted for 9 of the 14 runs the Redbirds pushed across the plate in the three game series.

Where have these two been?

Since Carlos Beltran’s departure, the Cards have had problems trying to fill the void left in the line-up, using Wong, Jhonny Peralta, Yadier Molina and Peter Bourjos, all in the first 44 games of the season.

But Wong, standing at just 5’9” and 185 compared to Beltran’s 6’1” 210 stature, certainly made his case quiet convincingly since being called back up from Triple-A Memphis, starting all three games against the Braves.
