(BaseballStL) – For the first time in 163 days, lefty Jaime Garcia is set to throw his first pitch in a MLB game today against the Atlanta Braves as the Redbirds try for the sweep.

The Cardinals activated Garcia Sunday from the disabled list and sent pitcher Jorge Rondon to Memphis. Manager Mike Matheny also said they would limit Garcia to throwing just 95 pitches in his first major league outing since May 17, 2013.

The Braves’ Dan Uggla gets his first start at second base since May 6th, which was also against the Cardinals and Tyler Lyons. Uggla has gotten to start against left-handed pitching and against Garcia, Uggla has 10 at-bats with 3 hits, 2 of them being doubles, and 2 walks.

Someone who has struggled against Garcia is Braves lead-off hitter Jason Heyward, who is 9 at-bats has just one hit and 3 strike-outs.

Last May Garcia underwent shoulder surgery for what doctors described as a tear in his labrum.

Checking-in with former Redbirds

David Freese has been out with since May 3rd after taking a pitch off his finger. Saturday, the former World Series MVP was in the line-up with Triple-A club the Salt Lake Bees. Freese went 1 for 3 with a homer and two walks in his first rehab start.

Albert Pujols has been splitting time between starting at first base and being the Angels’ designated hitter as he’s collected just 5 hits in his last 10 games, none of them home runs.

Carlos Beltran may have to undergo surgery after suffering an injury to his elbow while taking practice swings in the batting cages at Yankee Stadium last Monday. The Yankees placed the 37-year-old on the 15-day DL Thursday.

“I just was taking swings in the cage and felt a sharp pain,” Beltran told, “I took another one and felt the same, and told [manager] Joe [Girardi] that I wasn’t going to be able to continue.”

If Beltran undergoes surgery, he could be out six to eight weeks.
