Wong collects 2 hits and a stolen base in return to big leagues

(BaseballStL) – In his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis, Kolten Wong reaffirmed the faith the Cardinals have in him by going 2 for 4.

The second baseman also stole his tenth base of the season and scored a run in the Cardinals 5-2 victory.

“He had a couple of big hits today,” said Mike Matheny, “and also a real nice defensive play. He turns the double play at second real well.”

That defensive play came in the fifth inning with the game tied at two, robbing the Braves of a lead off hit. He also held onto a ball thrown by Yadier Molina to catch Jason Heyward stealing second. Heyward slide hard into Wong, but the Rainbow Warrior was as calm as the Hawaiian waters.

“He’s just an exciting player,” Matheny continued, “He brings electricity. Anything close to him, he was diving in the first couple of innings.”

“I just think he’s real happy to be back here and be apart of this club and we’re happy to have him.”

Wong was demoted to Triple-A on April 27th after beginning the season with the big club. Wong hit two homers and was 5 for 5 in steal attempts while in Memphis before being called back up to St. Louis on Wednesday.

“I think it’s important for anybody coming up here, you want to get off to a good start,” Matheny explained, “And to come back to show us what he’s been doing down there is reassuring to him that it’s not just a Triple-A thing. That same swing and same approach plays here in the big leagues as well.”
