LaRussa tells Wash U grads to take chances in life

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Three-time World Series-winning manager Tony La Russa says young people must be willing to take chances as they begin their working lives.

La Russa delivered the commencement speech Friday to nearly 3,000 students graduate at Washington University in St. Louis.

La Russa's address will give him practice for another one he will deliver this summer — when he's inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. He managed the Oakland A's to the 1989 championship and the St. LouisCardinals to World Series wins in 2006 and 2011. He retired following the 2011 championship.

It was the 153rd commencement for Washington University. Five honorary degrees were handed out, including one to H&R Block co-founder Henry W. Bloch and another to David E. Robertson, music director of the St. Louis Symphony.
