(BaseballStL) — Kolten Wong is back in the clubhouse after a bout with stomach illness, but he’ll have to wait a day before being in the starting lineup.
Mark Ellis will play second and bat eighth, and will look to pull his average up over .200. Currently hitting .190, Ellis hasn’t had multiple hits since May 4, and has only done it twice all season.
After reportedly sleeping for most of Wednesday, Wong will likely be good to start the first game of the series with Atlanta on Friday, but the staff is taking care not to rush him back.
“Last night was a long night for him and we were a little worried about dehydration,” Mike Matheny said. “I think we’ve all been there, trying to get your legs under yourself the next day isn’t necessarily the best way to jump right back into what we’re doing here.”
The Cardinal manager did say he would be available off the bench, so the team will not be shorthanded in the finale with the Cubs.
