Belleville police, DEA send drug warning after seven heroin overdoses in past two weeks

(KMOV) – A detective with the Belleville Police Department is sending a warning to drug users after seven people overdosed on a powerful form of heroin in the past two weeks.

Investigators with the Drug Enforcement Administration say that the levels of heroin bring bought on the street corners is coming from Mexico, and is 40 to 50 percent pure heroin. This compares to previous years when heroin was about 10 percent pure.

Police in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and in St. Charles responded to 134 heroin overdose deaths last year.

The DEA says the best way to warn users is to tell them to stop using the drug altogether.

The Belleville Police Department says they are still investigating the134 overdoses.

They did not say if they made any arrests.
